How to Select the Right Tile Trim

There are a few factors to keep in mind when deciding on how to select the right trim. Location of the trim is one major factor, whether it is in the kitchen, bath or even outside on the pool deck. There are speciality tile trimmers that can be used outdoors and are made of materials that withstand weather better than others.

PVC tile trim is designed to withstand scrubbing and the rigours of being used outside. All metals will degrade over time, even stainless steel, but PVC can hold up for a much longer period in areas where metal trim may not have the same lifespan. The pool area particularly will benefit from the use of this type of trim.

For the interior of the home, the PVC will work just as well, but there may be a need for a different kind of material. Many kitchens have modernised and are using stainless steel appliances which mean that the fixtures and trim will need to be of the same material in most cases. The metal trim is perfect for these areas as it accents not only the tile that is being used but the appliances at the same time.

The flooring tile will also need some trim in place to cover the raw edge and help it to transition to other flooring materials. The PVC trim is also high in this area on the floor will be cleaned on a regular basis, and the detergents and water will wear through the more inferior material. It is available in almost any colour and style to help the novice or professional interior designer achieve the look they want.

How to select the right trim is based only on a few factors, but they are all important. The colour, of course, will be one of the major decisions along with the type of material the trim is made. Take the time to look over all of the selections available as once this is in place, changing it out can be quite a chore.

Some unique tile metal trims are also available similar to a formable trim. These are mainly preferred for wavy obstacles like pillars, by using a tile trimming forming tool. Form-able trims are also compatible for floor tiling as well as for wall tiling. Trimming and edging are started from the top of the lapped-up flooring, and it is cut straight down to the meeting point of floors and walls. In the case of inside corners of the tiles, diagonally cut the excess flooring; gradually trimming is done until the tile lies flat in the corner. The material which is lapped up against the walls needs to be removed after trimming down the edges. Cutting away the door casing so as to provide a slip through for the flooring under the casings is one of the best ways to mask the exposed edge of the tile over a doorjamb. The tight fit of flooring around the doorways and other locations should be checked after tile trim and edging.

Cleaning the floor surface is essential after tile trimming and edging. Many floor cleaners are available which is recommended by the manufacturer that leaves your flooring unharmed. Proper solvents are available for wiping away the excess adhesive that left out on the surface. If the flooring is installed using an adhesive, make sure that the carpet is set firmly into the adhesive. For efficient tile trimming and edging use of a floor, a roller is recommended.
